About Us

Our vision statement

Learning that empowers

As mothers and aunties our goal is to create a better world and a better educational experience for our children and grandchildren.

Our story

In 1994 Lisa Buxton and Leesa Watego moved to Lisa’s home on the north coast of New South Wales (the Tweed) and started Nyumba Goori Studies Consultancy.

Straight out of university, they identified a gap in Aboriginal / Goori Studies knowledge of primary and secondary teachers in the area.

Gradually Lisa and Leesa would build up a client base of schools, travelling around teaching everything from Kindy Art to Year 11 English and Year 12 Legal Studies.

Over time, Nyumba became Blacklines Publications where it began publishing stand-alone texts, including Keeping the Connection: Celebrating Freshwater Stages Early One – Five, Christmas is Deadly and Easter is Deadly.

In 2007, with the advent of social media, Critical Classroom was born as a blog producing new content each week about race and racism and Australian education.

By 2015 we were producing e-publications and live-streaming. Alas, the Australian teacher market wasn’t ready for our early adoption of online technologies so our attention went to other areas.

Lisa Buxton continued and grew in her role as Aboriginal Education Officer with the Catholic Education Officer, while Leesa Watego continued to grow the business to become a creative agency and social media and business training business.

On the 10 March 2018 we decided to reboot the old Nyumba brand with a fresh energy and focus. So begins the next stage of our journey.
