Easter is deadly: Teaching and learning strategies for the Easter celebration

The last of our physical publications, Easter is deadly was published in 2010. Our goal was to provide teachers with an Indigenous perspective of Easter in a way that was informative and fun – everyone loves chocolate!

Like Christmas is deadly, Easter is deadly aims to help students to see that Easter is a foreign celebration, one that is imported to this continent. Thus it’s a way to explain colonisation in a way that is meaningful (it’s relevant to children) and easy to understand. We also thought it would be appropriate to throw in an Australian twist, hence Jaragun’s inclusion.

On reflection Easter is Deadly has a very Catholic feel – the Easter we present is definitely a Catholic version. We encourage educators however to adapt the materials to their context.

Easter is deadly features:

  • background information for teachers to assist them to lead a discussion of how Easter arrived in Australia and how Easter is celebrated in Australia
a detailed teaching strategy that provides teachers with a step-by-step direction to successfully lead students to understand this historical and contemporary celebration
  • 15 original and professionally Indigenous designed worksheets
  • Easter is deadly is suitable for the early years (0-8) and for middle years.
  • ISBN 0-9581073-4-3 20pp
